A unique platform for students to gain exposure to the diverse research journeys of seasoned researchers, the Student Symposium at the Natural Hazards Research Forum 2025 saw a strong turnout from postgraduate students from across the natural hazards research sector.
Eager to connect, learn and be inspired, the 25 attendees indicated a highlight was the interactive networking activity that not only broke the ice but also underscored the importance of empathy when working with communities affected by natural hazards.
Participants also benefited from targeted presentations delivered by Natural Hazards Research Australia staff experienced in partnership development and communications, offering practical advice and lessons drawn from real-world engagement and dissemination efforts.
The day concluded with an alumni panel featuring recent former PhD students who candidly discussed the challenges they faced during their research journey, ranging from fieldwork issues to motivation slumps, and how they overcame them. Their stories offered encouragement and actionable strategies for producing impactful, real-world research. The symposium reinforced the strength of the next generation of natural hazards researchers and highlighted the value of connection, empathy and resilience in both research and practice.
The Centre’s education program provides four main types of support – postgraduate (funded), associate, early career researcher development and industry fellowships.
