The Australian Flammability Monitoring System (AFMS) is being featured in two new exhibitions about space.
The newly opened Australian Space Discovery Centre will host information about the AFMS in an interactive exhibition as part of its Space Gallery. The Discovery Centre was officially opened by Prime Minister Scott Morrison on 31 March and is a new interactive facility in Adelaide, hosted by the Australian Space Agency. It features a Space Gallery that aims to inspire the Australian community by sharing advancements and opportunities in Australia’s space industry, as well as a careers hub that showcases space careers and pathways.
Questacon: The National Science and Technology Centre – a partner of the new Discovery Centre – is showing the AFMS at a travelling exhibition called Australia in Space. This exhibition helps people explore Australian innovation in space, including new innovations in space science and technology.
The AFMS was developed through the CRC, led by A/Prof Marta Yebra at the Australian National University. It is the world’s first near-real-time digital application for assessing how dry and flammable the vegetation and soil is, using satellite data to help users better understand the risk that bushfires pose to communities, landscapes and infrastructure.
Find out more about the AFMS in Hazard Note 88 and access the tool here.
A/Prof Yebra’s work on multi-spectoral sensors is also featuring in another Australian Space Discovery Centre exhibition called CubeSat Constructor.
