The Roles of Social and Mobile Media in Community Response and Recovery presentation will be delivered by - Brooke Fisher Liu, Associate Professor of Communication & Co-Director of Graduate Studies.
Dr Liu will present recent research on how effective risk and crisis communication can optimally prepare the public to respond and recover from disasters. Topics covered will include the appropriate use of humour in disaster preparedness messaging, the value of social media in disaster response messaging (compared to traditional media), effective imminent threat messaging via mobile devices, and journalists’ perspectives on the role of social media during disasters.
Dr. Liu is an associate professor of communication at the University of Maryland in Washington D.C. and directs the Risk Communication & Resilience Program at START. START is a U.S. Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence that focuses on the causes and consequences of terrorism along with other hazards.
The presentation will be followed by the opportunity for questions and discussion.
