CRC science has been highlighted by the United Nations in a new publication detailing case studies on using science for disaster risk reduction.
Following the third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai, Japan in March, the Scientific and Technical Advisory Group of the UN published Using science for disaster risk reduction. The document includes 10 case studies on best practice, with work by Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC's Dr Briony Towers featured. Now part of the Child centred disaster risk reduction project, Dr Towers completed her PhD through the previous Bushfire CRC.
Outcomes from Dr Towers' PhD were widely utilised, including informing an animated television bushfire safety campaign targeted at primary school kids, the development of a bushfire preparedness scenario for an online safety game for children, a companion resource for the game for school teachers and an ebook aimed helping parents talk to their kids about bushfire preparation.
