Farah Beaini, opening the thought Leadership RAF in Canberra, June 2019
To influence policy and strategy on disaster resilience at the highest levels research needed to clearly demonstrate the value of its economic models and provide good case studies as evidence of its worth.
The “Thought Leadership” Research Advisory Forum in Canberra this month focused on how the CRC’s research is supporting the economic, policy and planning aspects of disaster management. With a view to the next few years, the forum participants discussed how the research could be tailored to improve its value, and to identified gaps and opportunities for further research and utilisation.
The full day program brought together around 45 researchers and representatives from emergency services agency to collaborate on the practical applications of this research.
Taking place the day after the CRC’s Australasian Natural Hazards Management Conference at the Australian Institute of Sport the forum participants were inspired by two guest speakers on topics closely linked to that conference. Mark Crosweller, from the Department of Home Affairs, spoke about the need to prepare for the future with sound policies based on solid research. Prof Steve Dovers, from the Australian National University, got down to the detail on how to influence and support change to policies and practices in government departments and agencies.
The forum was chaired by CRC researcher Farah Beaini, Industry Research Coordinator in the Centre for Energy, the Environment and Natural Disasters at Deakin University.
The next Research Advisory Forum is on Extreme Weather – 30 July, Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Western Australia. For more information www.bnhcrc.com.au/events/2019-raf-perth
