The International Association of Wildland Fire’s (IAWF) 2021 student scholarship program is now accepting applications.
The scholarship is designed to promote academic work and graduate-level training within the global wildland fire community. This year, the IAWF will award two graduate-level scholarships, each valued at US$3,000, to IAWF members who are Master of Science/Arts or PhD students studying wildland fire or fire-related topics.
Previously, two Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC PhD students were successfully granted the scholarship. In 2019, CRC associate student Samuel Hillman was awarded the scholarship to support his PhD on fuel hazard estimation at RMIT. Dr Billy Haworth was also granted the scholarship in 2015 during his CRC-funded PhD at the University of Sydney, which explored the impacts of volunteered community information in bushfire preparation and disaster management.
The scholarship is a great way to contribute to and learn from the wildland fire research community across the world. The IAWF is looking for applications from students studying any aspect of wildland fire, including physical, ecological or social sciences, as well as less-traditional subject areas.
The CRC encourages any students interested and eligible to apply. More information, including eligibility and submission guidelines, can be accessed via the IAWF website.
The application period closes on 19 March.
Scholarship recipients will be announced at the 16th International Wildland Fire Safety Summit in May – a partnership between the IAWF, the CRC, the Pau Costa Foundation and the Association for Fire Ecology.
