This research developed a greater understanding of the initiation of smoldering combustion under different conditions. With little currently known about how smoldering contributes to fire development and ignitions, the study looked at the effects of oxygen concentration and heat transfer on the initiation of smoldering, and how it impacts different vegetation types.
This project was completed in May 2018.
