Postgraduate students at the workshop before the Perth Research Advisory Forum
More than 120 researchers, students and partner representatives participated in the CRC's Research Advisory Forum (RAF) in Perth in April.
The Forum was held at the new Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre at the University of Western Australia, over three days.
The first day was dedicated to development activities for PhD students with a workshop on life beyond a PhD, either as a researcher or employed in the sector. Several current and former CRC researchers shared their experiences along the career path, including the pitfalls, the opportunities and the choices they faced.
The two days RAF discussion focused on the Resilience and Policy themes of the research program. Projects from the following clusters presented in the main auditorium and held break out workshops at other times:
Governance and institutional knowledge
Economics, policy and decision-making
Scenario and loss analysis
Communications and warnings
Emergency management capability
Understanding and measuring social resilience
Sustainable volunteering
The program also included Three Minute Thesis presentations by four CRC PhD students:
Andrew Clarke, from CQUnivesrity and currently working with the Tasmania Fire Service, spoke about his study looking at fire safety messages and their relevance with children.
Miles Crawford, from Massey University, is looking at the hazard risk in New Zealand, specifically the risk of a tsunami around Wellington.
Bill Calcutt, from Wollongong University, spoke on the ongoing motivations of emergency service volunteers to continue in the role.
Charles Newland, is improving the calibrations of data models in disaster risk models at the University of Adelaide.
