Stronger together: celebrating International Women’s Day with Victoria’s emergency services

International Women’s Day 2019 was celebrated in Victoria on 8 March with an event at Federation Square, Melbourne. The Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC joined forces with AFAC and AIDR to showcase the achievements of women in natural hazards research.   

Car crash demonstrations and story time with firefighters for the little ones were just some of the interactive activities putting the theme ‘More powerful together’ into action.

Foot traffic for the day in Federation Square was estimated at 4,000, and with several school groups of various ages coming contributing to those numbers the event provided a great opportunity to highlight and promote careers in emergency services and natural hazards research to women and girls.

A special edition news feature was distributed in celebration of International Women’s Day to our HazarHazard News subscribers and those who visited the joint CRC/AFAC/AIDR stand, which highlighted award winning CRC researchers, blogs from female researchers on their work and key research on diversity and inclusion in emergency management.
