Hazard Note 106 - Impact-based forecasting: a new way to predict the community impact of east coast lows
This research used an existing weather prediction model to develop a new method of forecasting the impact of east coast lows on houses, using data from a 2015 east coast low in Dungog, New South Wales.
In a partnership between the Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC, the Bureau of Meteorology and Geoscience Australia, researchers demonstrated the effective use of emergency management data in the validation of wind impact forecasts – an approach that has not been possible until now.
The new capability is being used by the Bureau and Geoscience Australia to improve risk mitigation.
Hazard Note 106 summarises the research behind the new impact-based forecast capability and explains how it can be used.
