The Prescribed Burning Atlas is the focus of an upcoming webinar from the Centre of Excellence for Prescribed Burning, a partner of the Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC.
Time: 10am WA; 11:30am NT; 12pm Qld; 12:30pm SA; 1pm NSW, ACT, Vic and Tas; 3pm New Zealand
You can register your interest or learn more about the event on the Facebook event page.
At the event, which is aimed at land and prescribed burning managers, Dr Hamish Clarke (University of Wollongong/Western Sydney University and CRC) will give detailed instructions on how to use the recently launched Atlas.
It is a website that incorporates thousands of fire simulations, comparing the level of risk reduction achieved from different combinations of prescribed burning strategies – such as smaller edge burns close to homes, or large landscape-scale burns – across different landscapes in south east Australia.
The Atlas compares the costs of different mitigation options and their effect on reducing the likelihood of life loss, property loss and environmental values, as well as reducing the likelihood of effects of climate change on prescribed burning effectiveness.
This Centre of Excellence for Prescribed Burning event is supported by the CRC, as well as the University of Wollongong, the University of Western Sydney, the Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience AIDR, AFAC and the Forest Fire Management Group.
