A new approach to fire management training for northern Australia is being articulated by fire managers from indigenous and agency backgrounds and developed through the BNHCRC. This project will assess the impact of implemented training improvements through the investigation of both perceptions of competence / confidence and the measured impacts of (changed or static) fire management programs on the ground. The examination of fire management practice will rely on interrogation of remotely sensed data through publicly accessible web-sources such as NAFI. The project will document the perceptions of participants in fire management training who will range from Traditional Owners in remote communities in northern Australia to government agency staff as well as Bushfire Brigade volunteers. These perceptions will be gauged against the impacts of fire management practice on landscapes managed by graduates of the training courses. Feedback from these investigations will be provided to industry training bodies as well as the training providers to reinforce or improve content and practice.
