Flood management in a changing climate: integrating effective approaches

Population growth, urbanisation and climate change are magnifying flood risks on a global scale. These factors are likely to increase flood frequency, variability and severity for the majority of major global river basins. There is a risk that badly-planned, reactive responses to flooding may prove harmful in the long term. This research used international case studies to investigate which options are most robust to future flood scenarios. It identified institutional barriers and investigated whether disaster resilience policies lead to adaptive outcomes.

Dr Caroline Wenger Research Leader

This project concluded in 2017. The research was conducted by PhD student Caroline Wegner who looked at flood management in a changing climate: integrating effective approaches.

As an undergraduate, Caroline majored in archaeology and anthropology from 1986-1989 and for her honours thesis, she analysed shell midden material from Papua New Guinea. This led to a research assistant position to carry out similar work for another researcher as part of the Lapita homeland project. The results of her research were published by respective researchers.

Caroline now works in natural resource management where she's been a landcare volunteer for over twenty years.

In September 2015 she took part in ANU's Three Minute Thesis competition. Watch her presentation below.
